About our project

ABOUT OUR PROJECT

“MARE Nostrum” (“Mediterranean Art, Reminiscences and Environment” Nostrum) Project deals with the artistic, socio-cultural and environmental heritage of the Mediterranean countries participating, that is, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Our main objective is to raise awareness in our pupils of the richness of our common area, to build in them a sense of respect, responsibility and pride of our shared heritage.

This project has been designed to fulfil the prospect of making both pupils and teachers aware of the multicultural patchwork that the Mediterranean peoples share. Unfortunately, this heritage has been unfairly misregarded over the past. This is why we feel it mandatory to develop our project, we want to awaken consciousness upon the historical, cultural and environmental richness which we all have the obligation to preserve for the future generations to come.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGIES

1. As for the concrete OBJECTIVES of our partnership, we intend to:

1.1. Make students aware of the artistic, cultural, historical and environmental heritage of the countries participating by having a close look at the particular characteristics of each country;

1.2. Awaken a sense of responsibility and citizenship in our students as a way to prevent environmental disasters such as uncontrolled disposal of waste, fire-raising, desertification, etc.

1.3. Make students work together in a multicultural environment;

1.4. Produce multimedia resources to illustrate the reality of our common heritage at present:

1.4.1. Our students will video the area chosen for examination and will record the findings in the form of DVDs, which will be translated from English into every national language of the countries working on the project;

1.4.2. Our project includes the creation of a platform of communication via Internet by means of a blog for both students and teachers to share all pictures, videos, articles of opinion, etc. This virtual site will help us to make a bond between the Comenius community and strengthen relations;

1.5. Facilitate communication among different nationalities by means of a common vehicular language, English;

2. Regarding the SUBJECTS and PROBLEMS we intend to address, we will focus on:

2.1. The environmental reality of the Mediterranean shores today;

2.2. The cultural diversity of the area under study;

2.3. Our artistic heritage and its preservation;

2.4. The present and future of our reality;

3. As for the APPROACH we will take to achieve our objectives:

We intend to take a multidisciplinary approach which will help us have a closer idea of what the actual situation in the Mediterranean area is. We will work along with colleagues from didactic departments, such as: Natural Science, Social Science, ICT, Economics, Language and Literature, Classics, English, etc. so that the final study can be as detailed and realistic as possible.

Moreover, development of thinking skills and creativity will be at the heart of all the activities proposed. The teachers involved will also be encouraged to share resources and explore the differences in pedagogical approach.
